licence re-validations / renewals
Re-validation applies when a rating has not expired. If it has expired it will need to be renewed.
The requirements differ as explained below.
If you are at all uncertain then please telephone us or email us and we will do our best to help.
Single Engine Piston (Land) (SEPL)
Validity
A SEPL rating is valid for 24 months.
Passengers
To carry passengers, you must have completed at least 3 take offs and 3 landings in the last 90 days on the class of aircraft that you wish to fly, as sole manipulator of the aeroplane.
Re-validation
A SEPL may be re-validated by :
Producing log book evidence of having completed 12 hours in last 12 months of the 24 month validity period. Of these 12 hours, 6 hours must be as pilot in command but the others can be a combination of either pic or training flights. You must also have completed 12 take-offs and landings. One of these twelve hours must have been with a Flying Instructor who must countersign your log book.
If you are re-validating by flying experience, and providing the examiner signs your Certificate of Experience page in your licence within the
3 months prior to the rating expiring, the validity of the revalidated rating will be calculated from the date of expiry of the preceeding rating.
Renewal
Should your SEPL rating expire even by a day, then you will need to talk to an examiner to ascertain what you need to do to renew. You must be prepared to undertake a Skills Test though in accordance with JAR FCL 1.240.
Night

Validity
Night Qualifications have no expiry date. They are valid for the life of your licence.
Passengers
To be able to carry passengers at night, you will need to have 3 take-offs and 3 landings in the last 90 days on the type of aircraft you are intending to carry passengers. One of these take offs and landings must have been done at night.
Instrument Meteorological Conditions Rating (IMC)
Validity
An IMC rating is valid for 25 months.
Re-Validation
The IMC Rating will be revalidated by a revalidation Flight Test comprising
:-
- Limited Panel Instrument Flying. Straight and level flight, climbing and descending, turns onto selected headings, recovery from unusual attitudes.
- Let-Down and Approach Procedures. Let down and approach to Decision Height
or Minimum Descent Height, and missed approach procedures using a pilot-interpreted aid.
- Bad Weather Circuits.
Carry out a visual bad weather circuit and landing
following an instrument approach.
You will also need to produce evidence of having - in the period between the initial and/or revalidation flight tests, successfully completed a let-down and approach to DH/MDH, a go-around and a missed approach procedure, using an aid of a different type of that used on the test. This will be accomplished to the satisfaction of an instructor who is qualified to give instrument flying instruction. Alternatively, you may elect to carry out two approach procedures using different aids during the revalidation flight test.
Renewal
If you have allowed your IMC rating to lapse please telephone us so that we can advise on the renewal procedures.
